About Sheryl Tuorila
I am a handmade tile mosaic artist.
I am driven by the materials and seeing them together. So rarely do I make detailed drawings and plans.
Landscapes are new for me in the past couple of years. I wrote and received a grant in 2014 from the Minnesota Arts Board to travel around the state of Minnesota, visit natural attractions and then return to the studio to create art inspired by those trips. Up to then my work had been abstract. I am proud to say this new imagery has culminated in two large-scale landscape murals at the MSP airport.
During that time in nature I realized its immense healing qualities and have since made it part of my daily life. I strive to capture of a sunset or sunrise, the quiet solitude of a forest, the view of a complete horizon line. Taking time in nature to slow down, listen and observe and then in turn, taking the time in my studio to make the tile and create the mosaic - makes it all the more beautiful, amazing and transforming.
